Georgia has hired former Greene County head football coach Robert Edwards to its staff in a support role.
Edwards, a legendary running back for the Bulldogs, returns to Athens after building an extensive high school coaching résumé across the state of Georgia. He began his head coaching career at Arlington Christian in Fairburn from 2010–11, compiling a 15–7 record with the Eagles before being hired at Greene County.
Edwards spent six seasons leading the Tigers from 2012–17, with a 29–37 overall record and guiding the program to three playoff appearances, including a trip to the quarterfinals in 2016. He was later hired at Riverwood Academy in Sandy Springs, where he led the Raiders for four seasons, compiling a 32–11 record with two region titles. He most recently coached at his alma mater, Washington County, beginning in 2022, where he went 20–24 over four years and reached the playoffs each season, exiting in the first round.
A standout during his playing days at Georgia in the mid-1990s, Edwards remains one of the most explosive offensive players in program history before going on to play professionally in both the NFL and CFL.
While Edwards’ new role will not include on-field coaching duties, his hiring brings valuable experience and strong ties to Georgia high school football into the program. His background as both an elite former player and a longtime coach positions him as a resource for player development, mentorship, and program support.
Edwards’ return also represents a homecoming to the university where he made his mark as a player. His presence on staff adds another layer of connection between the Bulldogs and high school programs throughout the Peach State, reinforcing Georgia’s emphasis on relationships and player growth. With Edwards now on board, the Bulldogs continue to strengthen their support staff as they prepare for the 2026 season.
