Greene County’s track and field athletes turned in a strong showing at the GHSA Class A Division II sectional meet over the weekend, highlighted by a relay title and several top finishes against elite competition.
The standout performance came in the boys' 4x400-meter relay, where Clifford Springer, Braylen Hurt, Dontriel Grable, and Klemonta Riley surged to first place with a time of 3:36.42.
That victory sets Greene County up as a contender heading into next week’s state championships in Athens.
Riley also delivered a strong individual performance, placing fourth in the boys' 200-meter dash with a time of 22.93 seconds. He added to his workload as part of the boys' 4x100-meter relay team alongside Melvin Lawrence, Denim Harris, and Springer, which finished eighth in 45.52 seconds.
On the girls' side, Maleah Jarrells led the way with an impressive all-around effort. She finished runner-up in the 100-meter hurdles at 16.82 seconds and placed seventh in the 300-meter hurdles at 51.90 seconds. Jarrells also contributed in the field events, clearing 4 feet, 4 inches in the high jump.
In the throws, Jakayla Burdette earned a podium finish in the girls discus, placing third with a mark of 82 feet, 10 inches. On the boys' side, Kayden Monford placed seventh in the discus with a throw of 112 feet, 0.5 inches.
Hurt also contributed in the field events, clearing 5 feet, 8 inches in the boys' high jump.
Greene County’s girls 4x200-meter relay team of Nevaeh Craig, Carmen Freeman, Ja’Niyah Jones, and Jaylah Thompson placed sixth with a time of 2:01.36, rounding out a balanced effort from the Lady Tigers.
Head coach James Miller praised his team’s effort and development throughout the season.
“Proud is an understatement. I really enjoy watching them run, jump, and throw this year,” Miller said. “I enjoy this because it made me coach harder and enjoy it.”
With a relay title and multiple top-eight finishes, Greene County enters the state championships in A strong position. The meet will take place at the University of Georgia’s Spec Towns Track on Monday, May 11.
