Morgan County volleyball is headed back to the state championship match after a huge win on Saturday.
The Spike Dogs defeated Savannah Arts Academy 3-1 (25-13; 18-25; 25-17; 25-20) in a rematch of last season’s state title. They’re now aiming to win their second straight championship and their third in four years.
Morgan County dominated the first set 25-13 before losing the second 25-18. The Spike Dogs responded in the final two sets, winning 25-17 and narrowly edging out their opponent 25-20 to advance to the state championship match.
It was a team performance with seniors Natalie Phillips, E'mariona Johnson, Abby Dennard, Camryn Scherer, and Riley Mitchell leading Morgan County. Several underclassmen, including Brayden Burke, Graycen Cawthorne, Hollis Boyer, Hailey Floyd, and Mallory Davidison, among others, also performed well.
On Tuesday, Oct. 21, Morgan County defeated region rival Pike County 3-0 to advance to the Final Four and face the Panthers. Now, the top-seeded Spike Dogs will compete against No. 6 Ringgold in the state title match.
The Tigers defeated Richmond County Technical, Shaw, Columbus, and Franklin County to reach the final.
Morgan County (32-12) and Ringgold (34-11) will play the state title match on Thursday at 2 p.m. at the LakePoint Sports Complex in Cartersville.
