Smith leaves post as Greene County AD

After spending two years in the position, Chad Smith has resigned as Greene County’s athletic director.

Smith announced last week that he is returning to Central Gwinnett, where he has spent most of his career. He joins former Greene County football coach Terrance Banks, who left the program after last season.

“At the end of the 2024-25 school year, I will be resigning as Greene County High School’s athletic director,” Smith said. “I have an opportunity to go back home. With the exception of the last two years, I have spent my entire teaching and coaching career in Lawrenceville, with the majority of that being at Central Gwinnett.”

Smith left Greene County in better shape than he found it.

Smith aided in upgrading the facilities for various sports, including baseball and softball. He also helped with the installation of a digital billboard and jumbotron, as well as improvements to the track and turf field at Tiger Stadium.

Smith was instrumental in reviving softball and played a significant role in initiating an after-school food program at the school.

During his time at Greene County, athletics also excelled.

Several teams, including both basketball programs, girls soccer team, and the football team, made it to the postseason for two consecutive years. The track and field team had several state champions during his tenure as well.

Smith also encouraged children to participate in multiple sports at Greene County and wanted the coaches to take responsibility for their programs. He acknowledged that he saw significant progress during his two short years with the Tigers.

Smith stated that it was a “hard decision” for him, and he spent many “sleepless nights” wondering what to do.

“I am incredibly thankful for the time I spent at Greene County and the relationships I formed,” Smith said. “It is truly a great place. It was not an easy decision to leave, but hopefully the athletes, community, and coaches know how much they mean to me.”
