Putnam County High School’s football boosters raised money to support this season’s program with their annual golf tournament Saturday at Harbor Club in Greensboro.
The tournament kicked off around 9 a.m. and lasted a couple of hours. Each team played 18 holes of golf. The Putnam County football team’s two-man scramble winners were golfers Kevin McKleroy and Claxton West.
There were also games and prizes for the participants to win after playing a full round at Harbor Club.
War Eagles’ head coach Joel Harvin was pleased with the turnout and told The Eatonton Messenger the event sold out of spots to play.
“We shot for 36 teams and had to turn people away the day of the tournament,” Harvin said.
“Next year, we look to add a few more teams. We could possibly do a morning and afternoon flight to get more golfers involved.”
The Putnam County Touchdown Club raised the money to help the War Eagles pay for meals, recruiting trips, equipment, and any other necessities the program needs during the season.
Harvin said he was excited to see the community rally around the team and was proud of the support his players received.
“To see our coaches, Touchdown Club members, and players interact with our sponsors, and participants was great,” Harvin said. “It was great to see everyone mingle together. I feel like it brought our community together.”
Harvin also thanked the participants and sponsors since the tournament wouldn’t have been possible without them.
“I want to thank our participants and sponsors. If it weren’t for them, we wouldn’t be able to survive a football season,” he added. “A lot of that money raised goes into feeding our guys. Most of it also ensures our players are cared for throughout the year. Overall, we appreciate everyone who came to support us.”
There are talks of making next year’s tournament field much larger since demand was so high. Harvin said he felt bad turning teams away the day of the tournament.
“We’ve already talked about how to improve and get more teams involved in the future,” he said. “We’re already looking forward to next year. In a few years, we want this to be one of the biggest tournaments on Lake Oconee or in the surrounding area. We thank everyone for supporting us this year.”
