Morgan County tennis teams win region

Morgan County’s tennis teams recently dominated the Region 2-AA championships, winning both titles.

They both blazed their trail through the region tournament, capturing the top seed heading into the playoffs earlier this week. The teams enter the Class AA state playoffs in a strong position to make a deep run.

Morgan County tennis head coach Conner Perry expressed pride in his players for achieving one of their goals.

“We are proud of how both the boys and girls teams played today, each going undefeated in all their matches,” Perry told the Lake Oconee News. “It was a successful business trip before the state playoffs begin.”

Morgan County’s boys dominated Westside before defeating Pike County to capture the region championship.

Aiden West, Leyton Hull, and Tommy Arthur were instrumental in the singles matches for the Dogs. Their two doubles teams — Charlie Arnold and Walt Palmer, as well as Reese Freyer and Landen Behrndt — also performed well.

Morgan County’s girls first trounced Jackson and successfully defeated Callaway in the region championship match.

Mallory Martin, Kate Davis, and Madisyn Cunningham secured the Lady Dogs' singles points. Banessa Santoyo, Lyssa Schafer, Makenna Cannington, and Lillianne Piche also played crucial roles in the doubles matches.

Before the season, Perry prioritized scheduling tougher competition for non-region matches to better prepare his teams for their region slate and the postseason. His strategy paid off, as both teams won region titles.

“I did it on purpose because I wanted our teams to be prepared for playoff time,” Perry said about the schedule in March. “We’ve faced strong teams from both lower and higher classifications to make us battle-tested.”

Perry wants both of his teams to make a postseason run, aiming for each to land a spot in the Elite Eight.
