Greene County’s track and field teams competed at the Region 8A Division II meet last week in Warren County.
They did not perform up to the standard set by first-year head coach Ryan Andrews, however, they qualified several athletes for the state sectional meet. They have spent this week working hard and preparing for it.
“Performances at the region meet were up and down,” Andrews said. “I should’ve done a better job of preparing them.”
The Greene County girls finished fourth among five teams, scoring a total of 151 points. They placed behind Washington-Wilkes, Lincoln County, and host Warren County at the region meet on Wednesday, April 23.
The Lady Tigers didn’t have any athletes earn first-place finishes, but a few secured top-three positions in various events.
Kimora Harper had three second-place finishes, while Maleah Jarrells had two, and Jakayla Burdette earned one.
The Greene County boys placed third out of five teams, behind Lincoln County and Warren County. They scored a total of 120 points.
The Tigers had several first-place finishes, including RJ Monford winning the discus and shot put events, while Tamari Roberts secured the top spot in the 300-meter hurdles race.
Justin Robinson delivered impressive performances in the 800-meter and 1600-meter races, securing second place in both events. Levny Chavez also had a second-place finish in the 3200-meter run.
Including alternates, Greene County’s teams are sending a total of 28 athletes to the Class A Division II state sectional B meet, which will be held at Warren County once again on May 3. The meet in Warrenton will feature teams from Regions 3, 5, 7, and 8. The sectional A meet will showcase teams from Regions 1, 2, 4, and 6. It will take place at Hawkinsville High School on the same date.
Andrews is excited about the state sectional meet and believes that athletes will show up and perform well.
“Expectations at sectionals are to run more polished races and accept the results,” Andrews explained. “If we perform to our potential, we will accept the results with no regrets.”
The Class A Division II state track meet will take place on May 9-10 at Hugh Mills Stadium in Albany.
