Greene County’s track teams are off to a hot start this year with only a few meets left during the regular season.

The Tigers and Lady Tigers are still practicing hard before their region meet takes place next month.

Greene County head coach James Miller wants the best for his athletes, and he’s still trying to get the most out of them at this point in the season. Miller said conditioning and staying on a tight workout schedule is key.

The long-time coach is still deciding what events a few of his athletes participate in, hoping for the most success. He’s anticipating some of his boys and girls can bring home a state title in different events this year.

“We haven’t put it together yet and I’ve made about three or four changes to some stuff,” Miller said. “We got a slow start because some of our athletes came from basketball, but we’ve got some athletes who are going to compete.”

On the boys’ team, Chris Lowe has found his niche in the 110-meter hurdles. Doremus Alexander and Laryous Burt have also made significant strides and excelled in the 100-meter and 200-meter races this year.

In the field events, the Tigers have shined, especially in the shot put and discus competitions. Senior Dayshaun Copeland and juniors Kevin Wynn and RJ Monford have competed at a high level for the boys’ team.

“We’re pretty solid all around and I’ve some guys from last year that are going to compete,” Miller added.

On the girls’ team, Miller highlighted senior Alliyah Rhodes has been a leader. Miller acknowledged that Rhodes is a jack-of-all-trades, running the 100 and 200, and is also competing in the long jump and high jump.

Miller also mentioned sophomore Carla Dunn has stepped up and competed hard in the short-distance races. Miller has seen her try to set a new personal record at each meet the Lady Tigers have participated in.

Kimora Harper, Shameria Mitchell, Jesaria Porter and others have shined as well.

“We’ve got athletes on the girls’ side, but they’re young,” Miller said. “We just need some time to figure it all out.”

Greene County has around “55 to 60” athletes competing this season. He’s excited about this year’s group of distance runners and said it’s the most he’s “probably ever had” as a coach.

Kimora Harper, Eric Dolan, Mason Glenn, and JaCorey Mapp are a few distance runners’ names that Miller highlighted. Miller is hoping this group can attract more distance runners to come out heading into next year.

“It’s exciting to have that many kids come out and run distance for us,” Miller said. “There’s about eight boys and two girls. I’ve got quite a few kids that are going to compete and could place for us at the region meet.”

Greene County will host the Greene County Tiger Invitational at home this Friday, starting at 4 p.m.
