Greene County basketball players earn All-Region honors

Greene County’s basketball teams landed four players on the All-Region list for their performances this year.

Juniors Laryous Burt (All-Region First Team) and Ryder Eschbach (All-Region Second Team) were the Tigers selected. Junior Jessie Broadus also rounded out the boys’ side and was an All-Region honorable mention.

Senior “Osy” Amauria West (All-Region First Team) and Keaira Jernigan (All-Region Second Team) were selected for the Lady Tigers, who had several others named as honorable mentions. Seniors Erin Dixon and Aaliyah Rhodes, along with sophomore Jessaria Porter, were named honorable mentions in 2023-24.

Greene County boys’ coach Mark Wright was proud of Burt and Eschbach for All-Region selections as juniors.

“I’m proud of these three guys,” Wright said. “They’ve come a long way since the beginning of the season.”

Burt averaged a team-high 21 points and grabbed nine rebounds per game. Eschbach was also productive this season, averaging 13 points and team-leading six assists per contest. Broadus was the only Tiger to average a double-double, totaling 12 points and 11 rebounds per game for the Tigers during their 2023-24 season.

“Laryous has come a long way. His diligence and perseverance have been a catalyst for our team’s motivation. He’s always been dependable and a go-for us,” Wright added. “Ryder is our patient head on the team. He’s the thinker and the one that never gets rattled. His ability to recognize defenses and situations is impeccable. Jesse is a growing superstar. He never takes a day off and works his tail off to get better every day.”

The trio of Burt, Eschbach, and Broadus will return as seniors, along with a few others, for Wright and the Tigers.

Greene County girls’ coach Steven Hopper felt as if his team was represented well on the All-Region teams list.

“Our team wouldn’t have experienced this success without these girls,” Hopper said. “They all performed well.”

West was the Lady Tigers’ leading scorer, averaging 11.2 points, four assists, and one steal per game as a senior. Jernigan also averaged 11 points and a team-high 12 rebounds per contest during her junior campaign.

According to Hopper, Rhodes was one of the “most solid” defensive players in the region, adding that Dixon was one of the league’s “most diverse” players. He also acknowledged that Porter can earn the honor next year.

“It’s going to be hard to replace those four seniors, but we’ve got everybody else coming back, including two girls that made All-Region this year,” Hopper said. “So, we’ve got the key pieces we need for next year.”

Both the Tigers and Lady Tigers seasons’ came to a close in the second round of the Class A Division II state playoffs. The boys finished at 19-10 overall while the girls concluded their 2023-24 campaign at 15-13.
