Five Mat Dogs place at state traditionals meet

Morgan County’s wrestling program concluded the 2025–26 season last week at the 2026 GHSA Class 2A state traditionals championship meet.

The team traveled to The Arena at Southlake in Morrow with 10 state qualifiers — including one female wrestler — following the sectional tournaments the previous weekend. By the end of the championship meet, Morgan County had five athletes earn state placings, finishing 11th overall in Class 2A.

One of the most notable performances came from Airyanna Klinger, who made program history as the first Morgan County female wrestler to qualify for the traditional state tournament. Klinger capped her season with a sixth-place finish in her weight class, also becoming the first girls’ state placer in school history.

Kaleo Wilcoxson turned in one of the Mat Dogs’ strongest showings, finishing as the state runner-up in the 190-pound weight class. Wilcoxson entered the state tournament as a sectional champion and advanced to the finals, where he fell by major decision to Demond Hutchins of Miller Grove High School.

Lachlen Behrndt also earned a podium finish, placing fifth at state in the 138-pound division.

Behrndt qualified after a runner-up finish at sectionals and continued his strong postseason run in Morrow.

Senior Ja’mari Mundy wrapped up his final season with Morgan County by placing fourth in the 285-pound weight class. Mundy earned his state berth with a fourth-place sectional finish and ended his high school career among the state’s top heavyweights.

Another senior, Jatavious Ward, finished sixth at state in the 215-pound weight class.

The appearance marked Ward’s second consecutive trip to the state tournament, having also qualified during the 2024–25 season.

With multiple state placers, a historic milestone on the girls’ side, and a top-12 team finish, Morgan County closed the season with plenty to build on heading into next winter.
