Morgan County dominated Pike County from start to finish this past Friday at Bill Corry Stadium.
The Dogs easily defeated the Pirates 41-7, giving them a 9-0 overall record and a 4-0 mark in region play.
With the recent victory, Class AA’s No. 3 Morgan County is focusing on its Oct. 31 home matchup against No. 5 Callaway (7-2, 4-0). The winner of this Friday’s top-10 matchup between the Dogs and Cavaliers will be crowned region champions.
Morgan County head coach Clint Jenkins is happy with his team’s win over Pike County, but said it needs to make improvements before facing Callaway.
“We had many of the balls overthrown, underthrown, and some dropped passes,” Jenkins said. “It was a good win, but we have some stuff that we really need to clean up.”
Dogs’ senior quarterback Davis Strickland didn’t have his best performance. The West Georgia commit only completed 10 of 20 passes for 155 yards and two touchdowns.
Strickland threw his first touchdown reception early in the third quarter on a 15-yard pass to wide receiver Ty Tillery. He later threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to wideout Wyatt Singleton with a minute left in the third.
Morgan County’s offense totaled 222 rushing yards during the night, with senior running back Christan Monfort rushing for 162 on 15 carries with four scores. Like Strickland, Montfort is also a West Georgia commit, and he scored all four of his touchdowns in the first half.
Jenkins credited Monfort and the offensive line for maintaining a consistent performance throughout the game.
“Christian and our offensive line did a good job,” Jenkins said. “Our guys did well up front and were able to get the ball in the running game.”
According to Jenkins, the Pike County defense challenged the Dogs in the running game with a “loaded box” approach.
“With the loaded box, I thought our offensive line did a good job of [handling the challenge],” Jenkins said. “There were a couple more defenders in the box than in the past, and they definitely tried to stop the run.”
Morgan County’s defense quickly took action following Monfort’s first touchdown, forcing a fumble on Pike County’s 10-yard line during the kickoff return. In the second quarter, defensive back Zeki Locus intercepted a pass and returned it 20 yards, setting the offense up with good field position.
Jenkins acknowledged both plays as crucial moments in the game and said the defense has shown strength in taking the ball away from opposing offenses this season.
The team now moves on to its matchup with Callaway.
With the 2025 regular season nearing its conclusion, Jenkins said the Dogs have multiple reasons to look forward to their upcoming matchup with the Cavaliers, who won last year’s game, 33-26.
Morgan County will host senior night during the showdown, in addition to its significance as the region championship.
“This game is the setup for the playoff bracket, and so it’s super important to be the higher seed, to secure the home field advantage,” Jenkins said. “We’re just trying to keep in business mode, focus more on our execution, and how we play the game, since the other nine games are no longer in the situation.”
