Dogs scrimmage Walnut Grove to wrap up spring

Morgan County wrapped up its spring football slate on May 14, hosting Walnut Grove for a scrimmage.

The Thursday night matchup between the Bulldogs and Warriors gave several new faces a chance to showcase their potential ahead of the 2026 season.

Morgan County head coach Clint Jenkins said he was pleased with the team’s effort throughout spring practice. He noted that the main goal of the spring period is to evaluate improvements from both players and coaches.

“We wanna evaluate our kids, evaluate our personnel, see who’s a year better and who’s a year stronger,” Jenkins said. “We hit the reset button every year, so we start back at the letter A. From that aspect, the coaches did a really good job.”

Jenkins said the emphasis during the spring game centered around fundamentals such as blocking, tackling, running the football, and getting off blocks. While he felt the Bulldogs performed well overall against the Warriors, he also acknowledged there are still several areas that need improvement.

“I thought offensively, we put together some drives, but didn’t take care of the football at times as much as I’d like to,” Jenkins said. “Defensively, I thought we bared down a couple of times when we had to make plays and got a couple of stops. Then, when you look at the other side of it, they missed some opportunities, and they had some guys open.”

Jenkins credited the offensive line for its performance throughout the spring and said the group helped create multiple running-game opportunities for the running game.

“I thought that the offensive line did a great job, including Drew Breda and Harrison Mitchell,” Jenkins said. “We were able to run the football, and Nathan Faulkner did a really good job at running back for us.”

The upcoming season will bring major changes to Morgan County’s lineup, with 17 starters from the last season graduating later this week.

“Obviously, losing 17 starters in a class of 20-something, there’s gonna be changes,” Jenkins said. “It’s just a tremendous amount of opportunity right now for us.”

The Bulldogs relied on rising sophomore quarterback Bryce Blasingame as the starter during the scrimmage and will move into the fall with new leadership at the position.

Jenkins said he was impressed with Blasingame’s development during the spring.

“I thought he did a good job, and he has improved in a year,” Jenkins said. “He was the only quarterback we had, took all the snaps this spring, and got better.”

Jenkins believes the spring game provided valuable experience for what he described as a “young and inexperienced” team.

“I thought on top, they played really hard, that was a positive. We had a lot of guys that played well,” Jenkins said. “Some of these ninth-grade kids played well at times, and we’re excited about some of them getting to
