Diamond ‘Dogs blast Salem on Senior Night

MORGAN COUNTY

Morgan County baseball evened its record at 7-7 on Senior Night with a 15-0 rout of Salem this past Tuesday.

The Bulldogs honored five seniors - Drew Stephens, Jack Harper, Ethan Mizell, Jackson Miller and Brendan Conway before the game at Tracy Brown Field. They each contributed to the victory.

Morgan County’s bats continued to stay hot as it jumped out to an 11-0 lead in the bottom of the first.

Tripp Lancaster got the scoring started as he drove in Harper on a sacrifice fly. The Bulldogs then loaded the bases for Talan Fuller, who was hit by a pitch that scored Conway from third base.

Zach Moore popped up for the second out, but Ty Tillery crossed the plate as he tagged up to make it 3-0. Mizell then hit a triple to left centerfield, clearing the bases and adding two more runs.

Morgan County’s offense added six more runs in the top of the first, as all of them came with two outs. That gave the Bulldogs a huge cushion and with Miller on the mound, they cruised to victory.

Miller pitched three innings, giving zero hits and runs with one walk and seven strikeouts against the Seminoles. Stephens closed out the game in the fourth as the game ended due to the 10-run rule.

Morgan County added a pair of runs in the second and two more in the fourth. Lancaster picked up two more RBIs in the second on a single that scored Moore and Stephens, making it a 13-0 game.

Stephens put the final nail in the coffin with a hit scoring Mizell. He then turned a single into a run as he rounded the bases on an error by the Salem centerfielder, which ended the game.

Lancaster led Morgan County’s offense as he went 2-for-2 with a run scored and five RBIs. Mizell was also productive at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs.

The Bulldogs are now 3-0 in Region 4-AAA play, which is tied with Harlem for first place. They will face the Seminoles again on Friday in Conyers for a chance to sweep the series.

MCHS faced Apalachee on Wednesday in Winder (past press time). The Bulldogs will also travel to Douglasville on Monday to face Chapel Hill before returning home Tuesday to play Hephzibah. They will then face Social Circle on Wednesday and Hephzibah again next Friday.
