It has been a rough start for the Greene County boys’ basketball team, but that’s to be expected with a program’s first-year head coach and a mostly new roster.
As the players and staff have had time to come together as a unit, the Tigers have found more success.
After winning its home region opener in the first game of the season against Taliaferro County, head coach Mark Wright had to go back to the drawing board following that victory with three losses.
Greene County’s next win came against region opponent Washington-Wilkes last Friday. The Tigers had to travel to face the opposing Tigers but still came out on top 58-51.
Since that contest, Wright’s team has lost three straight games in a similar fashion.
The Tigers fell to Warren County 51-42 the following afternoon before traveling to play in the Peachtree Corners Christmas Classic earlier this week.
Wright’s squad matched up against schools like Wesleyan on Tuesday and Eagle’s Landing Christian Monday. The Tigers came up short in both games and struggled to find an effective offensive attack.
Greene County scored 68 points between the two contests while the team’s defense allowed 55 in both games.
Moving forward, Wright is just trying to get his young team more familiar with his system. Half of the team and starting lineup consists of underclassmen, so the learning curve is greater; however, the Tigers will have a great opportunity to get back on track after the Christmas break.
To start the second half of the season, Greene County is scheduled to travel down the road to take on region rival Lake Oconee Academy.
The Tigers won both games between these two programs last year, but the Titans are slowly improving as well. The cross-town rival is having its best season in recent memory, so both teams will be excited to potentially get a leg up in the first meeting on Jan. 6.
