In the May 26, 2023, Lake Oconee News, neighbors Mark Shultz, Denise Dale, Mike McClure, and Gerry Giesler each signed a letter as the Greene County Republican Party’s executive committee titled “Republicans, let’s go!”
I would like to inform these neighbors that the Republican party, led by womanizing and convicted sexual abuser Donald Trump, is in no position to dictate a moral majority.
Let’s examine just a couple of their points: Critical Race Theory (CRT): the worst thing about CRT is its name, a marketing blunder.
Once you can get past its name, CRT’s purpose is to examine and challenge the ways in which race and racism have shaped and continue to influence various aspects of society. Newsflash: any kid in school since the 1980s has been learning the fundamentals of CRT in public schools.
I’m sorry this foursome of neighbors missed out on these lessons because it would help if they learned why slavery was wrong, why achieving equal rights is important, and how prejudice still infiltrates board rooms and break rooms in the workplace. Perhaps if they leave their gated neighborhoods and socialize north of I-20 they will learn a few things.
Regarding the “minuscule LGBTQ+ segment of our society” comment: how large must a population be before they are no longer “minuscule” and can be afforded equal rights and equal protection under the law? Because a population is small, does it mean it should be treated differently? I wonder how our minuscule population of neighbors who are disabled and benefit from ADA protections feel about this comment.
Sadly, there are too many absurd statements made in this foursome’s letter to respond to each one. My ask of them and their followers is simple: turn off Fox News and Newsmax, leave your echo chamber, and lend a hand to a neighbor rather than slapping their hand while telling them how bad, wrong, or different they are. Want to compel people to follow your cause? Lead by example.
