Dear Editor: The midterm elections are very important with early voting starting October 17. In the state of Georgia, the position for Lt. Governor is especially significant, given that this person presides over debate in the Senate chamber and works with advocates to introduce legislation. And there has been a lot of legislation coming through that has been worrisome, much of it infringing on citizen rights.
Charlie Bailey is a candidate for Lt. Governor who deserves our vote. He formerly served as a Senior Assistant District Attorney in Fulton County and has spent his career getting justice for Georgians.
As an 8th-generation rural Georgian and UGA Graduate, Bailey knows that too many in our state are working hard but struggling to get by. He is a family man with a vision of a better Georgia for everyone. We’ve met him. He is smart, dedicated and just a down-to-earth nice guy.
Critical issues like public safety, economy, criminal justice reform, public and technical school funding and accessible health care are what Bailey is focused on.
His opponent is State Sen. Burt Jones. Jones was one of the 16 Georgians who served on the slate of Republican electors who falsely “certified” a Trump victory in December 2020 and was a leading proponent of a special legislative session after the election to try to overturn the will of the people.
Burt Jones signed papers supporting a court case by Texas to overturn Georgia’s results. In January 2021, Jones personally urged Vice President Mike Pence to delay Biden’s constitutional designation as president-elect. Even current Republican Lt. Governor Geoff Duncan refuses to endorse Jones.
Do you think Jones has the integrity needed to be second in command and oversee our state Senate? We think not. We must do better.
We need leaders with integrity and honesty. Leaders who look at the facts and the data and the science.
Leaders who face the truth and share it with their constituents. Leaders who put their oath to the constitution before their party loyalty.
