Neighbors, what legacy do you want for our community? Often we read articles and social media posts talking about our warm, friendly sense of community but then our actions go in a different direction.
I worry too many of us are wound around the axle about issues that just don’t affect us day to day._ Regarding legacy, I’ll point to a specific example: Recently, candidate Herschel Walker held a rally at Parkside Main 8. Dozens of neighbors attended, and so did the late-night show Jimmy Kimmel Live. And guess what happened next? Greensboro was featured on his show.
In case you missed it, visit YouTube and search for Jimmy Kimmel Live and the December 1st episode. As of this writing, it has 1,807,099 views. First, his show showcased the infamous farmer’s bales of hay spelling out “Run Herschel” on Highway 44.
Next, they interviewed several of you and made a fool of the candidate you were there to support (and our community by proxy).
The scene closed with more pictures of our beautiful city and the connotation was set: we are backwoods unintelligent lemmings. Our community is better than this: if the farmer’s hay bale sign and the political_rally attendees weren’t wrapped around the axle about issues that simply don’t matter, everyone would stop watching the 1% of news and 99% of opinion pieces on networks like OAN and MSNBC, we could have the most welcoming community on the planet. It’s time to put down the remote and focus on what matters - one another!
