In response to Gerry Giesler’s letter (Lake Oconee News, April 18, 2025) defending Georgia Republicans’ fixation on gender politics, let’s address the facts: there are currently zero transgender girls competing in school sports anywhere in Georgia.
This is not speculation — it was clearly stated during legislative debate by Rep. Karen Lupton, who noted, “Zero. Which incidentally is the amount of transgender students competing in K-12 sports in Georgia” (WSB-TV, April 2024).
Despite that, Republican lawmakers pushed ahead with legislation banning transgender girls from girls’ sports. Legislation that no athletic association, school sports league, or governing body in Georgia even asked for. No crisis prompted this. No teams raised concerns.
No unfair advantage was cited in any real case.
This is a classic example of a non-issue being turned into a headline-grabbing culture war, and it’s working because too many people are falling for it.
The irony is hard to miss: the party that claims to champion limited government and individual liberty is now legislating what amounts to imaginary threats, while ignoring real challenges that Georgia families face every day, like failing rural healthcare systems, underfunded public schools, and crumbling infrastructure.
This isn’t about fairness in sports. It’s about fear and control. And it’s a perfect demonstration of how easily Republican voters can be whipped into a frenzy over something that doesn’t exist. That’s not leadership. That’s manipulation.
