Letter to the Editor: Blue Star Memorial Marker

Dear Editor:

As we observe Veterans Day 2023, is anyone other than myself upset that the Blue Star Memorial Marker located in the Garden Club garden at the intersection of Highway 15 North and Highway 278 in Greensboro has not been repositioned after being hit by a vehicle months and months ago?

I’ve spoken to City Hall and a member of the Greensboro Garden Club and no one seems to know why it hasn’t been repositioned.

Do we feel so “safe” that we have forgotten the members of our armed forces or are we afraid of not being “politically correct?”

Blue Star Memorial Highways are highways in the United States that are marked to pay tribute to the U.S. armed forces.

The National Council of State Garden Clubs, now known as National Garden Clubs, Inc., started the program in 1945 after World War II. The blue star was used on service flags to denote a service member fighting in the war.

In an adjoining county, a Garden Club is paying rightful tribute to our Armed Forces by dedicating a Blue Star Memorial Marker this Veterans Day 2023.

Why is the Blue Star Memorial Marker in our town still lying on its side?

Sincerely, Linda Strickland Bone
