It’s time to decentralize

Dear editor:

It’s time to decentralize our federal government. It’s come to resemble the Hunger Game’s capital of Panem more than a city that represents U.S. citizens. It’s become more important to attend certain social functions in Washington than to attend to the people’s business. There are too many in high places that are connected in various ways and lobbyists remain too powerful.

First, out of necessity and now as a preference, many professionals are working from home. Technology, such as Zoom meetings, have provided private industry with the ability to conduct business from anywhere in the country.

Why not the federal government? Washington is a hub too concentrated in power and corruption.

There›s no reason now that the Department of Education can’t be headquartered in Kansas City, the Department of Transportation in Birmingham, or the Department if Agriculture in Des Moines. In the event of a foreign attack on Washington, our political infrastructure would be less vulnerable. Another advantage would be that the government would be closer to the governed. Trade in the “inside the beltway” mentality for an appreciation of “flyover country.”
