A Greensboro man wound up in the Greene County jail on July 28 after an altercation with an umpire during an adult softball game.
Sidney Tripp, 42, of 105 Wilson St., Greensboro, has been charged with simple battery as a result.
According to reports, Deputy Josh Corwin was dispatched to the Greene Recreation Complex on Old Union Point Road in reference to a fight.
When the deputy arrived, Corwin met with the victim of the assault, who had been umpiring a softball game. The umpire said one of the players, later identified as Tripp, became upset and got into a verbal altercation with him.
According to the report, the umpire warned Tripp to stay in the dugout multiple times, but he continued to argue with him.
The umpire finally had enough, but when he attempted to throw Tripp out of the game due to his behavior, Tripp got in the “umpire’s face and the two had to be physically separated.”
While the two men were being separated, Tripp threw a punch, hitting the umpire in the face and knocking his glasses off.
Corwin then spoke with a witness who said he had attempted to separate Tripp and the umpire.
The witness confirmed the umpire’s version of events.
Tripp left in his vehicle before Corwin arrived, but was arrested later.
