Lady Dogs win GADA Class 2A Director’s Cup

Morgan County High School athletics excelled during the 2024-25 academic school year, especially in girls’ sports.

The school was recently awarded the Georgia Athletic Directors Association (GADA) Directors Cup for the top female program in Class AA. The Lady Dogs achieved two state championships, one individual state title, seven region/area titles, two final four appearances, one elite eight appearance, and multiple top 10 finishes.

Morgan County’s girls won the award with 688 points. Overall, the school finished fourth with 1,097 points.

Morgan County athletic director Greg Thompson is proud of how his female athletes competed at a high level.

“Winning the Directors Cup is a reflection of our coaching staff and all of the hard work they put in,” Thompson said in a statement via email to the Lake Oconee News. “ The competition is tough, and many of the same schools dominate the cup every year. I am proud of our coaches, and they deserve all of the credit.”

Most notably, last fall, the Morgan County volleyball and softball teams won state championships on the same day. Kymora Smith, who has since graduated, won a state championship in the long jump for the track team. The girls’ basketball and soccer teams also had deep playoff runs to the Class AA semifinal round.

The GADA’s website states that the Directors Cup recognizes outstanding achievement by athletic departments in all Georgia High School Association (GHSA) classifications. Since the 1999-2000 academic school year, the GADA has awarded this honor annually. Schools that receive the award will be presented with a Regions Bank Directors Cup Trophy and a banner. Beginning in 2002-2003, the Directors Cup award has been given to the top male program, top female program, and top overall program in each classification.
