President Trump’s recent deployment of National Guard troops to Los Angeles in response to protests against ICE raids marks a troubling shift in federal intervention. Historically, such deployments have aimed to protect citizens exercising their constitutional rights. In 1965, for instance, President Lyndon Johnson sent troops to Alabama to safeguard civil rights demonstrators. Now, the military is being used to suppress those protesting what they see as unjust immigration enforcement.
The protests erupted after ICE conducted raids that reportedly targeted immigrants attempting to comply with legal processes, detaining individuals at ICE facilities as they sought to follow the law. This approach undermines trust in our immigration system and penalizes those striving to adhere to it.
President Trump’s pattern of labeling dissent as rebellion and deploying force against it raises concerns about authoritarian tendencies. His swift shift from alliance to antagonism with figures like Elon Musk, who transitioned quickly from best friend to “unhinged,” illustrates a broader unwillingness to tolerate disagreement. And he heaps praise and pardons on the Jan. 6 protestors who sacked the Capitol in Washington, chanting “Hang Mike Pence!”
This administration’s actions suggest a departure from traditional democratic norms, favoring a strong-arm approach over compromise. It’s imperative that we, as citizens, remain vigilant and advocate for the protection of civil liberties, the right to free speech, and the right to peaceful protest.
