On March 31, the Georgia House passed Senate Bill 1 by a 100-64 vote, mostly along party lines. The bill targets transgender girls, who make up just 0.1% to 0.15% of the state’s school-age population. And an even smaller percentage of those kids participate in sports. With such a small number of students affected, why is this where our leaders are choosing to spend time and energy?
Instead of banning participation, why not create solutions like inclusive sports leagues uniquely tailored for transgender youth?
Better yet, why not focus on something that impacts a large number of Georgia families? Around one million school-aged children in our state rely on free or reduced-price meals — about 60% of public school students. That program is largely funded by the federal government. With Trump’s political shifts threatening agencies like the Department of Education, Georgia’s lawmakers should be working to safeguard these programs, not wasting time fueling culture wars.
Our kids need to be fed, supported, and welcomed — not politicized. Let’s stop obsessing over private parts and start obsessing over real priorities that move our state forward.
