Dear editor,
I’ve worked hard all my life. I’ve scrimped and saved for my retirement. Not all of us can do that. I was lucky that one major illness or one horrific accident didn’t blow up in my face along the way. Now I live on social security and savings.
Recessions are fire sales for the rich. On-again/ off-again tariff taxes let the billionaires currently working inside our government redistribute wealth and power in ways that will harm most of us in the pocketbook. They make killings in the stock market because of insider knowledge. The rich might lose a lot, but they still have an obscene amount left to spend. When even a slight recession spells doom for small companies and many working Americans, fat cats feast off and gobble up the tanking businesses and foreclosed homes they helped set up for destruction. The middle class is the loser; we cannot win when the rules are stacked against us. The president says a little belt tightening is patriotic and good for us. No, it is not. This is just another transfer of wealth in a con game taking place under our noses.
Inflation and the cost of groceries are going up and a recession could be in the cards. I can’t afford to risk my retirement on the vague assurances of a bunch of glib billionaires. More bad news is coming unless we demand better service from our government. Where is Congress when we need them?
