Lady Titans off to hot start

Lake Oconee Academy’s girls soccer is halfway through the regular season.

After Tuesday, the Lady Titans are 5-3 overall and 2-0 in region play.

“Overall, the season has been competitive and a great learning experience for our team,” Lake Oconee Academy girls head coach Carina Baxley said.

She said the team has been challenged early, but that has helped the players figure out their strengths and highlight areas they need to grow in.

One area where the Lady Titans have grown is their communication and how the unit moves on offense and defense. They’re also working on consistency, finishing, and staying composed in high-pressure situations.

“Every [game] has taught us something new, and I’m proud of how the girls have responded so far,” Baxley admitted. “The players are starting to trust each other more and play with confidence.”

LOA is undefeated in region play, having defeated Greene County (7-0) and Washington Wilkes (10-0). The Lady Titans have two more region matches left, and they hope to capture a title.

LOA only plays four region games this year, so winning each one is crucial to the team’s success.

“Region games are where everything matters most, and starting strong builds confidence and momentum,” Baxley said. “Every region win helps set the tone for the rest of the season, and we want to keep that going.”

Lauren Glass had her junior season cut short due to injury, but is now healthy and thriving as a senior for LOA. Baxley said Glass has been a true leader for the Lady Titans, adding that only a few girls have stepped up. “Lauren’s leadership has been huge for us in the center,” Baxley said.

Defensively, Baxley said freshman Addi Everett and a few others have made a name for themselves. She also acknowledged that sophomore Addison Kelley has been another bright spot.

However, Baxley, who replaced Kourtney Kelley in the offseason, said she’s liked the team’s effort.

“It’s been a team effort,” Baxley said. “A lot of different players have had standout moments so far.”

LOA’s girls are coming off a season in which they lost in the state championship game. The Lady Titans are in a prime position to make another deep playoff run, and Baxley is excited to see how far they go.

“We’ve got a lot of season ahead,” Baxley said. “I’m excited to see how much more we can grow and accomplish together.”
