Morgan County High School volleyball coach Kathleen Goodwin announced last month that she was resigning after a successful five-year stint, and her replacement was recently announced.
MCHS athletic director Greg Thompson announced on social media that Alan Shultz, who was previously the head volleyball coach at Morgan County Middle School, would replace Goodwin.
Goodwin decided to step down to spend more time with her family.
“After five wonderful years as the head volleyball coach, I have made the hard decision to step down so I can spend more time with my family and be there as my son, Kellett, starts participating in his own activities,” Goodwin said. “This was a very hard decision to make, but I know it is the right one for me at this time.”
When Goodwin became the head coach, she was pregnant with her son. PT Hooten, who helped start the program, took over in her absence while she gave birth. Hooten also recently announced her resignation.
Goodwin helped set a standard for the volleyball program at Morgan County. She was a five-time Region Coach of the Year and led the team to five consecutive region championships during her tenure.
Morgan County finished as runners-up in 2020, losing in the state championship. The next season, the Spike Dogs lost in the quarterfinal round before winning the program’s first state championship in 2022. The team lost in the Elite Eight in 2023 but rebounded and won another championship this past season.
Goodwin feels like she is leaving the program at the right time.
“I’m so proud of this program and have so much love for my girls,” Goodwin said.
Shultz will now move to the high school from the middle school and will coach the team next season.
