Morgan’s Jasper Cason finds college home

Morgan County football senior Jasper Cason has made his decision about where he will play at the college level.

Cason recently committed to play at Doane University in Nebraska. The Tigers are part of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and compete in the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC).

Cason recently visited the school and fell in love with it. He said the Doane staff made him feel like a priority.

“I had a good connection with Coach Jonathan Johnson. I have a good feeling he’s going to do great things for the program,” Cason said. “He’s coached at the D1 level before, and he’s bringing that mentality and energy to Doane.”

Cason only played one season at Morgan County but made it count. The 5-foot-11, 200-pound senior played running back and outside linebacker for the Dogs, who went 11-2 overall this past year.

Even if it was only for one year, Morgan County head coach Clint Jenkins said he was lucky to have coached Cason.

“Jasper did a really good job this year. He came in right at the beginning [of the school year] and gave some us immediate production at running back,” Jenkins told the Lake Oconee News. “He had a huge game against Warren County. He played on special teams and gave his best effort in everything he did. I am really proud that he is getting an opportunity to continue his education and play football at the next level.”

Cason rushed for 150 yards on 18 attempts (8.3 yards per carry) with a touchdown against Warren County in the season opener. A few weeks later, he rushed for 65 yards on seven attempts and a touchdown against Rutland.

Unfortunately, Cason missed several games due to an injury. He played on and off during his senior campaign but was productive when he suited up for the Dogs. Cason returned healthy for their postseason run.

Cason acknowledged that the highlight of his senior season was scoring the game-winning touchdown against Sumter County, which sent Morgan County to the quarterfinal round of the postseason for the first time in over thirty years.

“I thought the injury was going to end my season, but I came back that game,” Cason said. “It was special because I had my family in the stands watching. It felt great after all I’ve been through during my high school career.”

Cason rushed for 117 yards on 15 carries and two scores in the second-round win over Sumter County. It was a surreal moment for Cason after he battled numerous injures throughout his high school football career.

Cason previously played at Camden County for legendary high school coach Jeff Herron from 2021-2023 before his family relocated to Morgan County last August. Herron wasn’t surprised Cason found a college home.

“Jasper is a great young man and player,” his former coach said. “He was literally the strongest player on our team and worked extremely hard to do precisely what you needed. I’m sure he will succeed at the next level.”

Cason enjoyed playing at Camden County for his first three years, but is also proud to call himself a Dog.

“I was so grateful to be able to play [at Morgan County], be healthy, and be on the field where my family and friends can watch me do what I love,” Cason said of his senior season.

Cason will enroll at Doane University in the fall, and the Tigers will use him as a running back.
