Letter to the Editor: Consider the consequences of downsizing the federal workforce

Dear Editor,

Cutting government waste is a reasonable goal, and in principle, I support DOGE’s mission. However, its reckless, indiscriminate approach to downsizing the federal workforce raises serious concerns. Some may argue that sweeping cuts are necessary — rip the Band-Aid off and move on — but let’s consider the consequences.

Thousands of federal employees have already lost their jobs. To some, this might seem like a win for the country, but what crime have these workers committed? They applied for legally funded positions, underwent the hiring process, and earned their roles just like any other employee in the public or private sector.

Beyond the personal toll, these mass layoffs are creating dangerous gaps in critical government functions. The USDA admits it accidentally fired officials working on bird flu. The National Nuclear Security Administration laid off workers responsible for keeping our nuclear stockpile safe. And the IRS is cutting staff during peak tax season.

DOGE’s strategy seems to target reto target recent hires who have not yet had their first performance reviews. Think about who will have time to train and prepare to take over job functions from those who retire or move on to new roles. This is succession planning 101.

Many may cheer these cuts now, but it’s time to start caring about people and functions that don’t make day-to-day. These sorts of recklessness weakens our country, and it’s time to pay attention and demand better.
