Dear editor,
I wish to render my opinion in reference to a letter published in last week’s news concerning commitment to diversity in our nation’s government.
It seems to me many people of all races and creeds believe our government leaders and decision-makers should be totally diversified in all ranks and skill levels. I, for one, take exception to that premise and wish to state my reasons why this is a false narrative, as all people regardless of their heritage or background should be entitled to occupy these positions only because of that reasoning? I do not know of you, the reader’s beliefs, but I want nothing but the best people leading this country, teaching in our schools and universities, governing our cities, states, and above all our military as the world’s leading power and not having been chosen because of the DEI initiatives being forced on us by that last administration. I am sure if you were in a foxhole in battle you would certainly want the BEST commander, not one chosen solely because of sex, color or heritage, correct?
Having been raised in a large poor family through the WWII years I know what it is like and was so grateful for any help received from charitable organizations I support, and certainly not from the government in those days, but it seems that, today, it is taken for granted that all people are entitled to the benefits of a good life. I certainly am not against helping the unfortunate people of our great country and do subscribe that all people are born with equal rights, but all people do not achieve equality in learning, behavior, self-advancement and love of God as they advance in age?
The other principal concern more recently is the flood of illegal immigrants into our country with open borders during the last administration that some people believe are now entitled to all the benefits and more than our natural-born citizens have. Yes, immigration is what founded and built our great country with people of all races, color and creeds, but virtually all came for a new opportunity not to the land of milk and honey where everybody has everything, so why can’t I have some? Do we want people from other lands coming to our country? You bet we do, but legally, and those who bring something to the table in exchange for the opportunity given them. The previous writer touched on the subject of birthright citizenship. I, for one, think this right should be granted only to those born to parents who entered this country legally and on the path to citizenship themselves and capable of supporting an entire family. As benevolent as the USA is, we just cannot be the land of milk and honey for everyone til we finally crack under the weight of all the free stuff.
In today’s world, it seems like it is a sin to succeed and become wealthy and people should give their excess to those who are not, but what happens to the incentive to become better or just maintain the status quo? Think about that!
