PAPA to hold auditions for On Golden Pond

The Plaza Alliance for the Performing Arts will hold auditions on Sunday and next Tuesday to cast its upcoming production of On Golden Pond by Ernest Thompson.

Performance dates have not yet been released, but auditions will be held at The Plaza Arts Center theater (305 N. Madison Ave., Eatonton) from 3-4:30 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 26, and 6-7:30 p.m. on Jan. 28.

On Golden Pond tells the story of Ethel and Norman Thayer, an elderly couple. Norman is 80 years old, and Ethel is in her 70s.

Chelsea, their daughter, is in her 40s. Norman and Chelsea have a history of not communicating well, so their relationship is complicated and needs healing.

Following a lengthy absence from her parents, Chelsea comes to the pond to visit them, bringing her boyfriend Bill (age 40 to 50) and Bill’s pre-adolescent son Billy. A sixth character is middle-aged Charlie, the lake mailman, a long-time friend of Norman, and Ethel and Chelsea's childhood friend.

On Golden Pond is a well-known play and movie. The characters are unforgettable, and the dialogue is often relatable, humorous, and poignant.

The drama and comedy of the play encourage viewers to confront issues that often arise between aging couples and their children while also portraying an enduring and profound love within the family.

Sarah Daly Weir and Dennis McClain are the directors of On Golden Pond at The Plaza. PAPA Chairperson Dottie McClain, the chairperson of PAPA, will manage production.
