Greene County’s youngest learners will enter a new school when classes return in January.
On Tuesday, the Greene County School System hosted the ribbon cutting and grand opening for Greene County Elementary School, located off Meadow Crest Road.
The grand opening included a prayer over the building, a performance from the Greene County Primary School Dance Team led by coaches Cameron Shuler and Tyya Alexander, self-guided tours, and holiday refreshments provided by Bonnie’s Coffee Shop & More.
Greene County Elementary School will house Pre-K through fifth grade under one roof, combining students currently split between CBJ Preschool, Greene County Primary School, and Carson Middle School.
The new 113,000-square-foot facility features bright, colorful classrooms, state-of-the-art technology, a theatre space, and collaborative common areas. To accommodate Greene's growing population, the school also has a large gym, media center, cafeteria, and playground.
“Our goal has always been to provide our students with an environment where they feel inspired, supported, and empowered to achieve their best. This new space is not just an infrastructure upgrade but an investment in our students’ futures,” Principal Ashlie Miller said. “It will serve as a place for learning, growth, collaboration, and innovation for many years to come.”
She and Superintendent Dr. Chris Houston thanked people who made the school possible, including contractor Evergreen Construction; architect David Tench with Gardner, Spencer, Smith, Tench & Jarbeau; the Board of Education; former board chair Mike Lynch; former board member Clarence Hunt; and donors.
They also thanked Sheriff Donnie Harrison, incoming BOE Chairman Otho Tucker, staff members, community partners, parents, and students for attending the ribbon cutting.
“This space represents more than just brick and mortar. It represents the hard work, dedication, and vision of so many people in our community,” Miller said. “We are incredibly grateful for all those who made it possible.”
Greene County Elementary students will start their first day at the new school on Jan. 9. On Jan. 8, an open house for parents and students is planned.
