Morgan County Sheriff Robert Markley was recognized by the U.S. Capitol this week as he prepares to turn in his badge.
U.S. Rep. Mike Collins, whose district includes Morgan County, visited the sheriff’s office Monday and presented Markley with a flag that was flown over the U.S. Capitol in honor of his 24 years of service to the community.
“Sheriff Markley has been a devoted lawman since 1990, and although I’m sure he’s looking forward to his retirement at the end of the year, he will truly be missed. Thank you for all of your hard work to keep us safe every day,” Collins wrote in a Facebook post.
“It was definitely very much appreciated and a great honor for Rep. Collins to stop by the sheriff’s office and present me with the flag that had been flown over the U.S. Capitol,” Markley told the Lake Oconee News. “It was very much appreciated, both for the presentation that he gave me and his friendship over the years. I definitely appreciate the support that I’ve been given by the citizens of Morgan County over the last 24 years, and we’ve worked hard to maintain the trust of the community. [I hope they feel] we’ve provided them a great service,” Markley shared about his time leading the sheriff’s office.
“I’ve been very proud of the men and women of the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office and what we’ve accomplished over those years, and I wish them well,” he added. “I know the incoming sheriff, Tyler Hooks, will do a great job, and I look forward to being able to transition the sheriff’s office to him come Jan. 1. I look forward to seeing what the next chapter holds for me, and, you know, we will see where it goes from here, but I’m excited about the possibilities.”
