Dear editor,
If my circle reflected the majority of our local electorate, perhaps I’d find it easier to understand the choice to re-elect Donald Trump. But my friends and family are a diverse group, and I’m struggling to reconcile this election’s outcome.
Among my friends is a working-class couple whose transgender son is navigating college midterms alongside the challenges of self-acceptance. Another friend, of 30 years, recently proposed to his partner; they’re excitedly planning a wedding, a hard-won celebration of love and acceptance. A friend’s daughter, in her 20s, commutes by train to her downtown Atlanta job — what if she were attacked and faced the need for an abortion after a brutal assault? Then there’s my friend, an immigrant, who has invested countless hours and resources to achieve legal status yet still feels uneasy traveling through certain parts of this country.
It would be simpler if my circle looked, thought, and lived like me. But for now, I hope the majority of our electorate proves this was the right path for everyone — not just those in the “right” circles.
