With retired educators in attendance, the Morgan County Board of Commissioners designated Nov. 3 as Retired Educators Day with a proclamation during its meeting on Oct. 15.
The proclamation followed Gov. Brian Kemp’s lead. In August, Kemp made a proclamation asking Georgians to observe Retired Educators Day on Nov. 3.
According to the county’s proclamation, more than 145,000 retired educators are in Georgia, including more than 33,000 members of the Georgia Retired Educators Association.
“The retired educators of Georgia donate thousands of hours of volunteer service and make invaluable contributions to the welfare of their respective communities across the state,” board chairman Bill Kurtz read from the proclamation. “It is appropriate that a day be designated for citizens to express their appreciation for the contributions that retired educators have made and continue to make for the betterment of human lives and society.”
In other business on Oct. 15, the BOC approved:
• Ab Agricultural Conservation Easement Program (ACEP) funding request for Hunter Farm. The applicant aims to apply to the federal program to encumber 68.39 acres in a conservation easement. The property is off Price Mill Road, adjacent to the Jacks Creek Tree Farm conservation easement. The county voted to commit $61,250 in FY26 (starting July 1, 2025), contingent upon the federal agency’s easement approval. The Madison-Morgan Conservancy will also commit $61,250 for a combined $122,500, 25 percent of the total easement value of $490,000.
• The county would eliminate its need to continue renting a 2015 Genie GA1930 scissor lift with 365 hours and a tilt trailer by purchasing one from United Rentals for $10,800. The purchase will be funded from SPLOST.
• There was an appointment of Carol Williams and Suzanne Cottongim to the Ag Center Authority Board.
• A corrective warranty deed to correct the grantee’s name.
