According to Assistant Police Chief Tommy Nelson, the Greensboro Police Department and the Greensboro City Council have imposed a curfew for youths under 18.
Nelson said the measure aims to improve the safety and well-being of Greensboro youth and the community at large.
Curfew hours begin at 10 p.m. on Sunday through Thursday and end at 6 a.m., and they begin at 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and end at 6 a.m.
“This decision comes in response to a rise in juvenile crime and violence, with the goal of fostering a safer environment for our children,” Nelson announced in a Facebook post. “It’s essential that we all take responsibility for the well-being of our youth, and this curfew is a step toward ensuring their safety and encouraging parental guidance.”
Exceptions to the curfew will include:
• engaging in emergency errands;
• returning directly home from school activities;
• traveling to or from lawful employment; • attending activities involving First Amendment rights (such as protests or religious gatherings);
• traveling with parental consent;
• being on their own property with permission.
“Parents and guardians, we need your cooperation,” Nelson continued. “It is crucial that we work together to supervise our minors and guide them in making safe choices.”
If a minor violates the curfew ordinances, the following penalties may apply: First violation: a warning will be issued to both the minor and the parent/guardian.
Subsequent violations: minors may face juvenile court complaints, with fines up to $1,000 or imprisonment for those aged 17.
Parents who fail to supervise their minors may face penalties, including fines for repeat violations.
“Let’s join hands to create a safer Greensboro for everyone,” Nelson said. “Thank you for your support and understanding as we implement this ordinance.”
