Area fat cats, big dogs gather to celebrate 25 years

GREENE COUNTY

The Lake Oconee Humane Society (LOHS) celebrated its 25th anniversary with a wine extravaganza at Oconee Brewing Company in downtown Greensboro on Friday, Aug. 9.

More than 200 area residents came out to celebrate and support the mission of LOHS to utilize outreach, education and services accessible to all for the benefit, security, and safety of companion animals. The evening’s event was emceed by Dr. Tyler Franks.

Board of Directors President Barbara Gniewek welcomed everyone from the stage and emphasized the transition underway from a singular focus on animal adoption in order to save lives to a community support approach emphasizing keeping animals with their families in their homes.

LOHS Executive Director Diane Robinson took the stage to describe the Society’s successes and statistics for animal adoption, spay/neuter and release, and community food distribution.

Lily Apollony (Dog Program Manager) and Dreama Thomas (Cat Program Manager) each spoke on their programs.

Attendees also learned of the LOHS Miracle Fund providing medical services for animals in LOHS’ care and the Community Fund for sustaining activities across the board.

Following the speakers, Eric “Ninja” Dodd and Matt Van Zander provided a musical set for everyone’s enjoyment. The entire set had people’s feet tapping.

The evening concluded with silent and live auctions of local dining and entertainment as well as three grand auction items of a North Carolina Vacation Weekend Getaway, a Shooting Event at Sandy Creek Sporting Grounds, and a golf lesson for three at The Kingdom of Golf.

LOHS acknowledged with thanks that the evening could not have happened, could not have been a great success, without the support of its many generous donors, large and small.
