MAGallery presents ‘Phantasmagoria’

MORGAN COUNTY

MAGallery in Madison presents “Phantasmagoria,” featuring the works of friends and professional artists Elisabeth Guibert, Timothy Holbrook, and Kim Holt in an exhibition opening with a catered reception and Artists Meet & Greet from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 6.

The exhibition, sponsored by Madison Realty, runs through Oct 12, with all works available for purchase.

“Phantasmagoria,” meaning “fantastic imagery as represented in art,” presents beautiful and powerful archetypes of familiar symbolism through the use of natural elements and traditional art media.

All three artists share a love and affinity for design work.

Guibert studied drawing, painting, and 2D design at Rhodes College and doesn’t remember a time in her life when she didn’t want to be an artist. She strives for her work to evoke an unexpected, positive emotion.

“Being an artist is a way of seeing the world and the magic in the ordinary,” she said. “Nature is full of this magic.”

Holbrook’s career as a carpenter followed a path inspired by architecture, design, and interior decoration. He said his artist friends are constant sources of creativity, and he openly credits them for much of his inspiration. With skills developed using hand tools, Holbrook’s imagination sparked with the idea of upcycling salvaged lumber into fantastical, phantasmagorical creatures.

Design work is Holt’s creative outlet. She said the practice of preserving and pinning butterflies and insects has always intrigued her, and putting them behind convex frames creates something fresh and light with natural but antique materials.

Holt has lived in the mountains of North Carolina for more than 30 years and said her relationship with nature inspires her artwork.
