Thief caught red-handed trying to steal from Walmart

Morgan County deputies assisted the Madison Police Department with a shoplifting case that led to the arrest of Jonathan Ramon Crawford, 29, of Madison, on two counts of misdemeanor shoplifting.

According to the report, Sergeant Chad Lanier of the MCSO was in the 441 Pawn Shop on Eatonton Road the morning of July 26 and observed Crawford pawning tool sets in their original packaging and a knife sharpener.

Deputies took photos of the items to find out where they came from.

Later that afternoon, Lanier and Sg. Chase Young was inside the IHOP restaurant next to the Pilot truck stop when Young saw Crawford enter the building.

Young said he witnessed Crawford take two toolsets of the same brand he had pawned earlier and head out the back door.

Young detained Crawford and Madison Police Officer Mike Maxwell was dispatched to the scene to make the arrest since it was inside Madison city limits.

Maxwell watched surveillance video that confirmed the theft. Maxwell also viewed a video of an earlier theft that may have involved the tools Crawford pawned at 441 Pawn Shop that morning.

Crawford was also found to be in possession of a glass “crack” pipe with cocaine residue, along with a piece of steel wool normally used for filtering, according to the report The tool sets were subsequently returned to the Pilot truck stop, and the knife sharpener — valued at $64.75 — was returned to Walmart.
