Lake Oconee News recently welcomed Hannah Barron as its new associate editor based at the LON offices in Greensboro and Madison.
In 2021, Barron graduated from the University of Georgia’s entertainment and media studies program.
Her journalism background includes serving as editor for The Madison County Journal, as well as a reporter for that paper, The Jackson Herald, The Barrow News-Journal, The
Braselton News and The Anson Record in North Carolina.
A resident of nearby Oconee County, Barron grew up with both her parents teaching in schools in the Lake Oconee area. She said the associate editor position is like a homecoming for her.
“Growing up, I visited their schools and the area’s local businesses many, many times,” she said. “I’ve followed the news of the area since I was little and have always loved the community here. I’m very excited to lead news coverage and to get out and meet more people. I love Lake Oconee and I’m honored to follow my parents’ footsteps in working here.”
Smith Communications President & CEO A. Mark Smith also believes Hannah’s knowledge of the area will be an asset.
“We are happy to welcome Hannah Barron to our staff as associate editor,” he said. “Her experience and knowledge of Georgia’s Lake Country will be a benefit to our loyal readersand the company.”
Managing Editor Josh Lurie invited Barron to join the staff based on her energy and enthusiasm for local news.
“Despite what’s happening to many large, daily papers, newspapers in smaller communities remain vital to the well-being of the areas they serve,” he said. Hannah is clearly dedicated to that idea and brings the experience needed to be effective in her new role.”
Barron’s direct line at the LON office is 706-707-4982, or an email can be sent to hannah@lakeoconeenews.us.
