Mr. Lee Sweetapple of Greensboro, Georgia, passed away on May 29, 2024. Mr. Sweetapple was 89 years old.
Lee was born on October 11, 1934, in Franklin, Pennsylvania, to Willis Sweetapple and Mary Meals on October 11, 1934. He was the youngest of eight children, all of whom predeceased Lee.
After graduating from Clintonville High School, he began working at Franklin Plastics. Before this job, he held many positions, including setting pins at a bowling alley.
Lee married Shirley Cubbison on June 7, 1957. Jill and Amy arrived in the 1960s.
1968 is also the year the Sweetapples moved to Georgia. In 1971, they moved from Monroe to Greensboro, where Lee opened a plastic pipe manufacturing company. In 1975, he sold the business to Nibco and moved his family to Chester, Virginia, where they remained until Lee bought his pipe plant back from Nibco in 1978. Sweetapple Plastics thrived, and many locals worked at the plant.
Eventually, Lee sold the business in 1982. He retired for about five minutes and bought and sold several companies, eventually focusing on real estate. He built and rented many buildings and invested in stocks.
After many years of work, work, work, and at the age of 87, Lee dismantled his business and finally retired.
Lee loved to read The Wall Street Journal, the Bible, essays on the Bible, and philosophy. He also had a strong sense of humor and collected joke books. He always said, “Have fun!” Lee also enjoyed working in the yard and washing his cars. In his retirement, he watched many TV shows, mainly the Cowboys, preachers, classic films, and news.
A graveside service was held at Greenview Cemetery on Tuesday, June 4, at 11 am. Instead of flowers, please donate to the First Presbyterian Church of Greensboro, 117 South Main Street, Greensboro, GA 30642.
Lee was the head of his family and cared for the outside of the house, while Shirley cared for the inside.
They were a good team and seldom argued. Lee was always happy in the morning and strove to be an optimist. He guided his children with care and successfully walked the line between giving advice and letting them forge their own paths. McCommons Funeral Home, 109 W. Broad St., Greensboro, GA, (706) 453-2626, handles arrangements.
