Lady Dogs' soccer rack up postseason honors

The Morgan County girls’ soccer team had nine players garner All-Region 4-AAA honors this year.

Rylee Bernard, Campbell Stamps, McKinsey Williams, and Kate Reynolds earned First Team honors. Jaden Young, Chloe Cook, Katherine Tybor, Carly Hagler, and Mia McClain were named to the Second Team. Ari Paine, Addy Green, Molly Mockaitis, and Abigail Benoff made the honorable mention list.

Morgan County head coach Anne Stamps was proud of her players’ accomplishments and selections to the All-Region team. These 13 players were recognized by the league’s coaches this year.

“It is always an honor to have Morgan County Soccer players represented on the All-Region team,” Stamps told the Lake Oconee News. “The number of players that we normally have selected is a strong statement of the ongoing growth of our program, which makes me very proud. These girls deserve all the recognition they can get for all the hard work they put into their sport.”

Bernard, Stamps, Hagler, and Williams were seniors this season, along with Lofton Cathey and Mariana Victoria. These six girls helped lead their team back to the playoffs for a fourth straight year.

Morgan County class of 2024 has won three region championships, four straight playoff appearances, and a birth in the Elite Eight.

Earlier this season, Stamps talked about how close this year’s seniors were and how they’ve helped the program grow since the start of their first year.

“These seniors have played soccer together since they were in primary school. They know exactly what to say and do to get the best out of each other and the rest of their team,” she said. “They’ve been leaders for this program for four years and haven’t taken that job lightly. There will be some big shoes to fill next year.”

Morgan County finished second in the region standings behind the Academy of Richmond County. The Lady Dogs hosted and defeated Crisp County 10-0 in the first round of the state playoffs.

Morgan County’s season ended in the second round a few days later to Savannah Country Day. The Lady Hornets bested the Lady Dogs in penalty kicks after neither of them scored in the extra period.

Morgan County’s season ended with an 8-6-1 overall record and a 5-3 mark in the region. The Lady Dogs return most of their talent next year, including McClain, one of the team’s leading scorers.
