Despite a challenging start to the season, the Gatewood boys’ soccer team has demonstrated remarkable resilience, culminating in a string of victories over the past month.
The Gators ended the regular season with an uneven 6-7 record but have won two straight playoff matches to get their record above .500. They defeated Monsignor Donovan (6-2) and Augusta Prep Day (4-2) to advance to the Georgia Independent Athletic Association (GIAA) Class AA semifinal against Trinity Christian High School this week.
Gatewood head coach Cindy Gregory is proud of her team for finishing the regular season on a solid note and continuing to play well in the postseason. She said the road win over Augusta Prep last Friday was special.
“That win was huge for us, especially because we split with them during the regular season,” Gregory said. “Augusta Prep is a tough team. They play soccer year-round, but we were able to grind out a big win on the road.”
The quarterfinal tilt was tight as the teams were tied 2-2 at the end of the first half. However, Gatewood’s offense kicked it into high gear in the second half, scoring two goals to secure a 4-2 victory and advance past the Cavaliers.
Senior Blake Callaway recorded a hat trick for the Gators, while junior Charlie Randolph also scored a goal in the win. Freshman goalkeeper Parker Hollie was also clutch in holding the Cavs scoreless in the final half.
“We played our game that night. Our goal is to always get it to Blake Callaway, who can score instantly,” Gregory said. “We stuck to our game plan, which worked out for us. That’s what we’ve been doing all year long.”
According to Gregory, the playoff win over Augusta Prep is the season’s “highlight” so far.
“We knew what we had to do and completed the task,” she said. We entered a hostile environment and won.”
Callaway has been a problem for opposing defenses all season long. His three goals against August Prep pushed his total to over 30 so far in 2024. The Gators' top three scorers are Callaway, fellow senior Jayden Daniel, and Randolph.
This year has been a historic season for the Gators. This year’s squad is the first to make it back to the semifinal round of the state playoffs in 12 years. The Gators have also won eight games, which they haven’t done in eight years prior.
Gatewood entered this week on a three-game winning streak, its second longest of the season. On April 23, the Gators knocked off rival Piedmont Academy for a second time this year before their playoff run began.
Gregory credits her players, especially the three seniors in Callaway, Daniel, and Luke McNeil, for the team’s success. She also raved about her underclassmen performing with “determination and grit” this year.
“They’re a band of brothers out there. They just like playing together,” she said. “We’ve got a great group.”
The Gators suffered a lopsided 11-1 loss to Trinity Christian on March 4 in their first game of the regular season. They returned to Dublin on Tuesday this week (after The Eatonton Messenger press time) to face the Crusaders for the second time this season in the GIAA 2-A semifinals.
