A Morgan County juvenile is being charged with arson, interference with government property, and disruption of a public school after he allegedly set fire to a Morgan County Elementary School restroom, according to reports obtained from the MCSO.
After the fire was reported at 10:05 a.m., the school was evacuated, and heavy smoke could be seen on the ceiling near the bathrooms in the fifth-grade hall. School staff extinguished the blaze before City of Madison and Morgan County Fire and Rescue arrived to verify the fire was contained and set up ventilation.
According to the report, the juvenile was the last one seen leaving the restroom before the fire was discovered. When the juvenile was interviewed about the incident, a cigarette lighter was found in his shoe.
The school decided to charge the juvenile and the Department of Juvenile Justice set up a hearing at the Putnam County Courthouse for March 14.
