Dear Editor,
The killing of Laken Riley in Athens by a migrant from Venezuela is heartbreaking. Out for a run, Laken had every right to enjoy the fresh air and scenery without worrying about her safety. Her loss is a tragedy.
Immediately following the news of her assailant being captured, folks took to social media to blame Biden and blame illegal immigration.
This tragedy was no more caused by illegal immigration than Charles Manson’s murders were caused byhis birthright citizenship. This was caused by evil, and evil knows no borders.
Decoupling the two, I agree that illegal immigration is a problem. But it’s a problem no border fence, wall, or barbed wire can fix. We need to shift our focus to fix the root cause of the immigration crisis: the evil inside the Central and South American countries, south of Mexico, that people are fleeing. Immigrants are coming north to escape danger to their lives. Who can blame them? Most of us would do the same.
