Festival Hall in Greensboro will open the third season of its Jazz Legacy Series on Feb. 8, with its presentation of The Jazz Legacy Project: Dave Brubeck, Time Out.
Brubeck’s Time Out album helped him to achieve status among the most popular jazz artists of the late 1950s and throughout the ‘60s.
Time Out is one of the best-selling jazz albums of all time, the first ever to sell more than a million copies, and now has recorded approximately 2.5 million sales since its release late in 1959. The Jazz Legacy show will feature songs from this iconic album, as well as chronicle the bold move Brubeck made during the Civil Rights movement.
“We are so excited to kick off our third Jazz Legacy Series with this wonderful program celebrating the great Dave Brubeck,” Festival Hall Executive Director Nicole Chillemi said. “The Jazz Legacy Project always brings a fantastic show, and this is a fan favorite.”
Dave Brubeck, Time Out is the first in the fourpart Jazz Legacy Series at Festival Hall this year. Each program lasts about 90 minutes, intended to bring the casual jazz listener inside the minds and music of the most influential and interesting American musicians of all time.
The life and music of each featured artist/ composer is entertainingly narrated by Jazz Legacy Project drummer Justin Varnes, and seminal jazz pieces are played to illuminate the narration.
Significantly, these are not tribute concerts in the sense that the musicians are trying to recreate the original performances but are meant instead to celebrate the essence and accomplishments of each featured artist.
Tickets to The Jazz Legacy Project: Dave Brubeck, Time Out, scheduled for 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 8, are available now but selling fast, starting at $25 for general admission, with a limited number of tables for four available at $200 each.
