MORGAN COUNTY
A South Carolina woman traveling with her five-year-old son and her dog was arrested Christmas Eve after leading a Morgan County Deputy on a brief chase at speeds over 110 mph.
Chelcia Cyniece Jeffries, 31, of Taylors, S.C., is facing two counts of improper passing, reckless driving, expired registration, possession of marijuana, and fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer.
According to reports, Deputy Miguel Ocon saw a silver SUV pass two vehicles while traveling southbound on Athens Highway near Sandy Creek Road, When Ocon made a U-turn and attempted to conduct a traffic stop, the vehicle fled from the deputy and made more illegal passes at speeds that reached 117 mph.
The SUV driven by Jeffries turned right on North Main Street and headed toward Madison before stopping in front of the Badcock furniture store.
Jeffries was asked to exit the vehicle and was arrested.
Jeffries told Ocon she was traveling to Rutledge to see her family for Christmas and that her son and a dog were still in the car. Ocon advised Jeffries to have family members come for the dog and her son.
Ocon said he detected an odor of marijuana inside the vehicle and found a plastic baggy inside Jeffries’ purse.
Jeffries’s family arrived and picked up her son and the dog.
