Letter to the Editor: Garden Club to repair Blue Star marker

Dear Editor,

This is in response to Linda Strickland Bone’s remarks (Nov. 17, Lake Oconee News) about the damaged Blue Star Memorial Marker that was located in the Veterans Memorial Garden (VMG) in Greensboro and not being “repositioned” in time for Veterans Day.

The marker was broken into several pieces and the pole was damaged beyond repair when struck by an errant car in June. The Greensboro Garden Club is a small, nonprofit club, caring for the VMG since 1944. The club has a long history of honoring the courageous individuals who sacrificed and dedicated their lives in service to our community and nation.

Our club has ordered a new marker and pole with the estimated delivery being four to five months.

We are developing a plan for the VMG which involves the removal of the live oak tree that also was damaged during this incident. Once this garden plan is finalized and the marker received, we plan to rededicate the Blue Star Memorial Marker.

The Greensboro Garden Club meets every fourth Monday between September and May. Everyone is welcome to attend and participate in all our activities and fundraisers that are used to improve the community. Our monthly programs are announced in the Calendar of Events in local publications.

Cheryl Martin President, Greensboro Garden Club
