The Madison-Morgan Cultural Center (MMCC) is holding a Christmas-themed, family-friendly event on Dec. 8, as “A Burchfield Family Christmas” appears in The Hall on Foster Street. The show features a seasonal supergroup of internationally recognized musicians who promise to blend old and new Christmas classics with harmony, wit, and enthusiasm.
“It’s going to be a great warm-up for Christmas with happy parents and happy kids,” professional drummer and Morgan County resident Colin Agnew promised.
The show will weave its way through Christmas classics with a unique set of professional musicians including Sam Burchfield with his deep Appalachian roots-filled music and his wife, Pip the Pansy. This year it also includes the Athens-based group Cicada Rhythm in an exceptional ensemble for the 90-minute presentation.
“We’ll play through some Christmas classics from the ‘60s and ‘70s,” Agnew said.
Children will be given plenty of room to move and dance in The Hall, MMCC Performing Arts Committee Chair Valle Ashley added. “This is going to be so much fun,” she said. “We are hoping that families bring their kids to enjoy a live, enthusiastic Christmas show with exceptional and talented musicians.”
“A Burchfield Family Christmas” has played to standing-room-only audiences at Eddie’s Attic in Atlanta for the last five years in special, once-a-year performances. This year, the traveling musicians will open the show at The Hall on Friday, Dec. 8, play Eddie’s Attic the next day, and finish with a third show on Sunday at Hendershots in Athens.
Ashley said the Madison-Morgan Cultural Center’s Hall is the perfect venue for the Burchfield Christmas show. The former gymnasium will be decorated in an eclectic style to support a show that will include covers of Aretha Franklin and Bing Crosby and a Christmas-themed audience sing-along. There will be audience seating and first-come tables available.
Tickets for the show are $25 for adults, with children free while attending with their parents. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. for a 7 p.m. start. Free cookies, juice, and cider will be available for children, with beer and wine on sale for adults. For more information, visit mmcc-arts.org or call MMCC (434 S. Main St., Madison) at 706-342-4743.
