LAKE COUNTRY
The Rotary Club of Greene and Putnam Counties recently announced its Students of-the-Month for October 2023: Evan Bennett of Gatewood Schools, Emily Abarca Sanchez from Nathanael Greene Academy, and Evan Nipper at Putnam County High School. (Greene County High School and Lake Oconee Academy were on fall break, so their students will be recognized at a future meeting.)
Evan Bennett is a senior at Gatewood High School, where he is an honor roll student, class president, and member of the Gatewood Anchor Club, competes in Literary, plays football, and runs track. Evan also enjoys occasionally preaching in the chapel to the Gatewood middle and high school bodies.
His parents are Dan and Christine Bennett.
After high school, Evan has a full scholarship to play football for the Division 1 University of North Carolina Tar Heels in Chapel Hill. He plans to pursue a career in education. His Bible teacher and weightlifting coach, John McMillan, is Evan’s chosen Gatewood High School teacher of the month.
Emily Abarca Sanchez is a senior at Nathanael Greene Academy (NGA).
Emily’s parents are Carlos Abarca and Yuliana Sanchez. She is an honor roll student and was treasurer of the NGA Beta Club during her junior year She is now vice president for her senior year. Emily is the class president of 2024, the class ambassador for Chick-fil-A’s leader academy, a teacher’s aide for kindergarten through 5th grade, and volunteers to help coach the Little Patriots cheer team for K-3 through 3rd grade.
Emily has participated in volleyball, tennis, basketball, chorus, and One-Act play, where she won two actors' awards and placed region runner-up last year in literary. She also is a captain of her cheer team. She enjoys working at the Parkside Main 8 theater, helping others, and spending time with friends. Emily considers her generosity, reliability, being good with children, and the ability to laugh at anything, especially her jokes, her best qualities. She cites her friends and teachers as her main inspiration and motivators. Emily hopes to attend the University of Georgia after graduating from high school, and she selected Andrea Finch as her NGA teacher of the month.
Evan Nipper is a senior at Putnam County High School. Evan's parents are Tim and Becky Nipper.
Evan is a former PCHS marching band member, current jazz ensemble member, artist, and a member of the Beta Club, National Honor Society, and Anchor Club. He enjoys spending his time drawing and painting.
Evan also is a volunteer for the Ferst Foundation and Eatonton First United Methodist Church. He considers his perfectionism his best attribute. After high school, Evan plans to attend the University of Georgia to pursue a degree in fine arts. Evan sees himself curating for a gallery in 10 years. Evan chose Emily Salmon as his teacher of the month.
